Allen Henkin wanted to make a difference in the world so he joined the army. He eventually fought and helped out in the Vietnam War. “It made me grow up very fast.” He recalled. In 1963, Allen Henkin was just seventeen when he decided to join the army and fight in the Vietnam War. Living in Philadelphia currently, Allen is now seventy-one, works a part time job at a car store and he is also a proud dad of one. “I wanted to serve my country, too many people were running away and protesting the war.” Allen explained. He knew he should make do something and join, so that is what he did. He was a combat engineer in the war which he made dangerous weapons that supplied the soldiers. I was an engineer, combat engineer. Boot camp training was pushups and situps. The camp lasted a couple weeks, then I joined the war and the requirements were hard. There would be phases to go by each week.” Allen knew it would be tough, but he wasn’t Courage the cowardly dog when it came time to training and the war. He was a hero, like superman saving the day. Knowing what he signed up for, he worked very hard and was determined. “The hardest part was being shot at between the bullets and the bombs” Allen knew there were many risks and hardships, but he pushed through it and made a difference. He was like an olympian, working hard for the gold medal. “Every day there were people shooting at you and trying to kill you.” A bullet contacted the edge of his leg making a bloody crease. Luckily, he survived and healed quickly. Knowing Allen who was just seventeen joined the army and fought in Vietnam is incredible. Just like any other soldier, Allen served this country but by choice. Everyone should remember to thank the citizens who served in any army force like the Navy, the Army, Marines, and any of the wars.
