Paul Wilkerson, a British expert on terrorism once said “fighting terrorism is like being a goalkeeper. You can make a hundred brilliant saves, but the only shot that people remember is the one that gets past you” Paul Wilkerson’s claim accurately describes the anarchic and chaotic situation that is currently taking place in Northern Nigeria. The country of Nigeria is facing many problems domestically. For example the Islamic militant group Boko Haram has claimed the lives of hundreds innocent Nigerian people since 2009. Initially focused on opposing western education, the phrase “Boko Haram” in the Hausa language means western education is sinful or forbidden”. Boko Haram fist started out as a political entity and was founded by the now deceased Islamic cleric, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2002 before becoming a terrorist organization. The problems that Nigeria is facing is one of concerning to Nigerians and the international community. Most of Boko Harams members come from the Kanuri ethnic group, which makes up 4% of Nigeria’s 167 million population. Nigeria is a country filled with many ethnic and religious groups. The major ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, Ijaw, Kanuri, Ibibio, and Tiv. Nigerian people are divided between ethno-linguistic and religious groups. Broadly speaking, the Hausa-Fulani people in northern Nigeria are predominately Muslim. Whereas the Yoruba’s of southwest Nigeria are Muslim and Christian. Igbos of the southeast Nigeria and neighboring ethnic groups are Christian and animist. Central Nigeria is home to hundreds of ethnic groups with different religious beliefs. Also around the city of Jos there are consistent clashes between Muslims who speak Hausa and Christian members of the Berom ethnic
