The minor prophet I chose is Jonah he is a prophet of the northern kingdom of Israel in about the 8th century BCE. Jonah is the son of Amittai and he appears in the book Kings 2 as a prophet from Gath-Hepher which is a border town in ancient Israel, a few miles north of Nazareth. He is there described as being active during the rule of the second King Jeroboam (c.786–746 BCE). And as predicting that Jeroboam will recover certain lost territories the tribes had lost during the spilt of the kingdom in 930 BC. Which led to the 10 tribes splitting away from the bottom two and the name of the bottom two tribes is called Judah. In the book of Jonah who was the author? Well in the book of Jonah it was never said who wrote the book but after reading it I feel as though Jonah wasn’t the author because the book wasn’t written in first person. Also while reading the book the author puts Jonah’s dialogue in quotations which means he’s writing what Jonah said Jonah isn’t writing what he is saying. The date when the book of Jonah was written is uncertain. “Because of certain features of the language of the book and because of its theological themes, many scholars conclude that the book was written sometime between 500-400 B.C.E., after the Babylonian exile”. At this time, there was tension between Jews and Gentiles in Judah and that is a major theme of the book. Cause some of the people of Israel as well as Judah had something against the other peoples like the Assyrians or Babylon’s. Like in the book of Jonah, Jonah dislikes the Nineveh’s only because he wanted God to punish the people there but God sent him to warn the people there to give the people there a chance to repent and that’s what they did and God showed how he is merciful
