The Book of Joshua marks the transition from the Law of Moses ‘Torah’ in the Hebrew to prophecy. The Greek translation changes it from the Law to History. Joshua introduces a new kind of literature. The Book of Joshua reveals the leadership transition from Moses to Joshua and from the wilderness wandering as punishment to land of conquest as reward and fulfilment for the children of Israel. The Book of Joshua states how they entered, conquered, possessed and divided the land. A Theology of the Book of Joshua addresses basic issues. Joshua had an excellent spirit and demonstrated the God kind of faith as he led the children of Israel in possession of the promised land. The Israelite pledged loyalty to Joshua as the successor of Moses. God’s Command to Joshua to meditate on “the Book of the Law” day and night observing what was written in it made Joshua successful and prosperous in life and he was victorious with all the children of Israel in possessing the land of promise. Joshua sent two men to spy the city of Jericho and they brought a positive report. Joshua led the children of Israel out of the wilderness into the promised land, crossing river Jordan as on dry ground, just as Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt through the Red Sea, which they crossed on dry land. Joshua worshipped Jesus the captain of the host of the armies of the Lord. He was strengthened and encouraged to go forward and fight the spiritual and physical battles because he was confident that he was not alone God was his helper.
