LITERARY ELEMENTS: Setting: Great Gatsby is set in New York City and on Long Island, in two areas known as "West Egg" and "East Egg" Long Island's beach communities were home to the rich and fabulous of the New York City area. “East Egg” is home to the older monied families, the highest ranked in society, the “West Egg” is home to the self made rich, the people who worked for their money and despite their riches, they are still classed below those from “East Egg” in society. Plot: The Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway. Nick just moved from out west to the New York area. He travels to East Egg to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom. When the former lovers meet, their reunion is slightly nervous, but shortly, the two are once again comfortable with each other, leaving Nick to feel an outsider. The three move the party from Nick's house to Gatsby's, where he shows Daisy his house to show her just how far out of poverty he has traveled. Daisy and Tom attend one of Gatsby's parties. Tom spends his time chasing women, while Daisy and Gatsby sneak over to Nick's house to talk while Nick keeps guard. After the Buchanans leave, Gatsby tells Nick his goal, to recapture the past. As the summer goes on, Gatsby and Daisy's affair begins to grow and they see each other regularly. On one of the hottest days of the summer, Gatsby and Nick go to East Egg to have lunch with the Buchanans and Jordan Baker. Daisy suggests they take a trip to the city. No longer hiding her love for Gatsby, Daisy pays him special attention and Tom picks up on what's going on. As they prepare to leave for the city, Tom gets a bottle of whiskey. Tom, Nick, and Jordan drive in Gatsby's car, while Gatsby and Daisy drive Tom's. Tom stops Gatsby's car at Wilson's gas station, where he sees that Wilson is not well.
