For many year blacks have been hindered from success, but now blacks have the opportunity to work their way up next to whites if they unite and follow either Booker T. Washington or W.E.B. Dubois. W.E.B. Dubois believes that blacks should demand that blacks fight for their freedom now. On the other hand, Booker T. Washington realizes that the whites aren’t ready for equality with blacks and that they need to gradually increase their freedom by becoming economically successful first then by gradually becoming free. After the Civil War and during the reconstruction time period for African Americans, the discussion of abolition and accommodation began. Even being free, blacks did not have equal rights to the white man and were not free from discrimination. Both the white and black populations split and argued for equality through submission or through demands. Booker T. Washington wrote the “Atlanta Compromise” to portray his ideas that the black population needs to submit to the white population to gain their equalities later on in time. Abolitionists such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Frederick Douglass disagreed with Washington’s ideas and instead wanted equal rights to earn their place in society.

Washington knows how to overcome challenges through hard work, which is another reason why his philosophy is better than W.E.B. Dubois. Booker T. Washington was able to overcome the dumb slave stereotype when he went to school, while it wasn't common for African Americans to go to school. While W.E.B DuBois went to school, he was able to get a scholarship and was able to go to an all-black school. For example, in 1872 Booker T Washington had the opportunity to go to Tuskegee Institute but didn't have the money to pay, but since he knew how to overcome challenges through hard work, he worked as a cleaner to pay it off. "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that, one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."

After studying earth for 150 years we have collected many valuable artifacts and to bring these home we have to leave a crew member behind to influence earth. I am choosing to leave behind Booker T. Washington instead of W.E.B Dubois. I have chosen Washington to stay because I believe his slower approach towards racial progress in the U.S will result in less violence. Washington believes that if black’s learn trade skills they can slowly emerge themselves into society as an equals. He has plans to create an all African American school teaching trade skills to blacks called Tuskegee Normal.

Imagine being an African American during the Progressive Era and not having the same rights that other people have. Booker T. Washington was born to a slave in 1856 and his mother was a cook on a plantation, while his father was a unknown white man most likely from a nearby plantation. At a young age, Washington worked hard and was sometimes beaten if he did not do what he was supposed to. There was a schoolhouse near the plantation he worked at, and he saw children his age learning, but at the time it was illegal to teach slaves. At nine years old, Booker T. Washington went to work with his step father instead of going to school.
The fact that Booker T Washington did not address to African Americans civil rights, is really important because it demonstrates that W.E.B DuBois did more than Booker T Washington. W.E.B addressed the rights of African Americans, which if fixed could create better education for African

Booker T. Washington was born a slave and worked as a janitor to get through school. Whereas W.E.B. Du Bois was born in the North and faced very little discrimination, and had an easier time getting into College. They were well educated, and the only difference between them was how they were raised in different environments. Both were on the journey to improve African American’s social and political status in America. However, they had different methods for getting what they wanted.
He was of the last generation of leaders who were born into slavery that became the leader of the African American community who lacked voting rights, and living under the notorious Jim Crow laws. Booker T Washington was born in 1856, he as other children of slaves were born a slave. His mother was a cook and his father was an unknown white man. Booker’s education started when his mother noticed his interest in learning and got him a book from which he learned the alphabet and how to read and write basic words. He was extremely driven to pursue that he left his home in West Virginia and walked 500 miles to Hampton Normal Agricultural Institute in Virginia.
William Edward Burghardt(W.E.B) Du Bois was one of the most prominent African- American protest leaders in the 20th century. He was a scholar and activist. He co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.) in 1909. He also attended a school in Nashville, Tennessee called Fisk University.
