Brevard is a sanctuary for people, animals and plants. It is likewise a venue for tourists to soak in the sun and take advantage of all the wonderful sites and businesses to visit. Trash is a nuisance and causes suffering to animals on the beach and the economy in Brevard. There a local government sanctioned bodies who overlook a certain part of Brevard’s economy. There are also profit and nonprofit organizations such as Keep Brevard Beautiful and the Sea Turtle Preservation Society who take part in cleaning beaches and other wildlife locations in Brevard. The amount of money going into these government and nongovernment bodies are a crucial piece to how much beaches are maintained. The effects of trash can be seen as a motivation to take another step in the right direction. Trash has a variety of spin-offs to divergent parts of wildlife on Brevard beaches. Cigarettes and plastic bags is the most evident of producing negative ramifications. It is very prevalent that cigarettes are mistaken for food devoured by mostly birds and turtles. When these meaningful creatures intake cigarette buds, they are ingesting very harmful chemicals such as pesticides, fungicides, and nicotine. Nicotine alone kills birds as well as fairly large animals like dogs easily because “each cigarette bud contains 9 mg to 30 mg” and it only takes “as little as 1 mg” to be lethal to dogs, not to mention the smallest amounts of a bud is incredibly deadly to the majority of birds because they are relatively small. (Novotny) Plastic is just as harmful as cigarettes because it can ravage animals by way of choking or physical impairments that can starve them to death or put to death through the digestion of harmful chemicals. Wildlife that would be prone to this in Brevard would be crabs, sea turtles, manatees, small birds, and cranes that often visit on or near the beaches. If more money was put in the waste management department, it would go a long way to protecting innocent wildlife on the beach and not to mention the endangered ones on the
