The CCR Standards have been implemented in several districts, but implementation is at its infancy with the Adult Division of the LAUSD. The CCR Standards is slowly becoming a major factor when purchasing materials, developing curriculum, planning lessons, evaluating, and for adult education programming in the Adult Division of the LAUSD.
AB86 Regional Consortia is working to coordinate adult education services and has identified the need to align adult education systems among K-12, adult education, and community college. The CCRS will facilitate transitions and program integration by guiding the coordination of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The belief that students need listening and speaking practice with the language before considering reading is no longer true; text-complexity can be integrated at every level. In the past, teachers gave students text at their instructional level and asked basic comprehension questions about text and students gave their opinions or relied on personal experiences to answer questions. ESL teachers also simplified text by breaking down complex sentences into simple sentences and used resources such as word lists to help control the vocabulary and predict the problems students will face when they read or write. Now, teachers must provide regular practice with complex text to challenge students and help them navigate and understand complex text. Instruction will ensure students are answering more text-dependent questions that require more evidence-based comprehension questions and require students to dig deeply in their material to understand the text. This levels the learning because all students are using the same information to provide their answers and it does not give the advantage to students with more knowledge or personal experience with a certain topic. Instead, all students will have to rely on the language and mechanics of the text itself. Group activities that focus on employment are a great way to integrate CCR Standards. An example of this is the following group activity on researching a career they would like to have in the future: Collaborating in teams, students brainstorm a list of questions to research about a particular job and record the information on a guided note-taking template. Student groups give oral presentations in front of the class. During the presentations, they cite references and use academic language. Other class members take notes using the same, guided note-taking template. Based on the information shared, class members evaluate and discuss career preferences. The group activity can easily be adapted for Beginning-level ESL
