The article, Calling the shots in public education: Parents, politicians, and educators clash, acquires information about the role all three authorities play in reforming the New York City public school system. This journal article was found on JSTOR which is a trusted academic source regarding education reform provided by the library at Wagner College. Written in 2011, makes the political education changes more recent for a research paper. The main topic of this reading is the battle between parents, community groups, and mayor's role of education politics in New York City. Questioning whether or not budget spending is a state legislative decision. Starting in the 1990’s, contemporary reformers began to focus on cities who opted for mayoral control of education throughout their districts. Prior to these events, mayoral control of public schools were focused primarily by incorporating separate school districts into municipal government. Before Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City was elected in 2001, public schools were run by a mass amount of state government leaders and were exposed to experiments of decentralized community control. Alongside Chancellor Joel Klein and supported by the Barack Obama administration, Bloomberg was the example of expanding mayoral control in cities across the country. Non profit organizations that were expressing their opinions of this new political reform were consequently being funded by Bloomberg himself. Although this action resulted into improvement of test scores in the city , many parents and local communities were outraged at the little involvement they had for their children's education.
