Cannabis kills! Well, this might not be so true; in fact it’s terribly wrong. There are records of people using cannabis to treat a variety of illnesses and diseases dating back thousands of years. Over all of this time there has not been one single death caused by cannabis. It could be said that making it illegal has caused a lot more problems than it being legal. For one, it fills our already vastly overcrowded prison system. It is also a waste of police time and resources on non violent people when there are much bigger things to worry about. We already have more people incarcerated than any other country in the world. This is not a good thing to be number one in. Over fifteen percent of our prison population is people with small cannabis charges (Reason 1 source 1). This is a ridiculous fact. We should not be incarcerating people for a whole year on small crimes with little dangers. A year is just on the low end of this as there are many people that get locked up for multiple years just on being repeat offenders. All of this work putting these people away is wasting a lot of the polices time. There are murderers, rapist, and robbers loose on the street, and instead of putting them away we force the police to waste their time on petty little drug charges. Police spend an estimated one million hours a year enforcing cannabis laws (reason 1 source 2). One million hours of their time not focusing on the real dangers to society. It's really ridiculous. If you're a person who wants our country to be better off, then you should want cannabis to be decriminalized. Of course decriminalization still needs the police to enforce the laws. However, it would drastically decrease. Currently on every case that goes to court, police spend an average of sixteen hours total. You may have heard that cannabis has medical properties to help sick people. This is not science fiction and is true. There is a very negative stigma put around cannabis by our government over the past few decades. Modern science is proving a lot of those facts wrong, and shedding light on its positive properties. Many people think that smoking cannabis harms your lungs. Though this may surprise you, many studies have found that there is no long term damage caused by smoking cannabis. In fact, it only showed an increased lung capacity among smokers. It only can give a small irritation in the throat of some users, but this goes away as soon as they stop. This can be totally avoided by using other methods such as vaping it(reason 3 source 1). Cannabis also helps people suffering from glaucoma. This eye disease causes high pressure on the eyeball and can lead to total blindness. This is a horrible thing for people to suffer through. However, there is hope. Studies show that cannabis helps to relieve pressure on the eyeball. This is not a long term solution, though there is hope a form of cannabis could be made that makes this affect longer, helping them in the long term(reason 3 source 1). Cannabis also helps immensely in a severe seizure disorder called dravets syndrome. This is a very unforgiving thing for a child to go through. Many with it won't live to adulthood. It
