The experiment we conducted was done in order to tell the effect that moderate exercise had on cardiovascular physiology. When exercise is performed oxygen, consumption is increased approximately 10-fold in order to keep up with the requirements the muscles have (Shepard, 1999). This larger oxygen requirement increases the blood flow from 1 L/min to up to 20 L/min in order to compensate for the increased oxygen requirements of the muscles, which is known as exercise hyperemia (Guyton, 1985). Using a digital sphygmomanometer, which calculates blood pressure and heart rate through inflating a blood pressure cuff, allowing the observation of the change in heart rate and blood pressure after exercise (Kosinski, 2017). According to Marieb (1989), the average heart rate …show more content…

According to Goodman (1999), an active 20-year-old will have a target heart rate while exercising between 144 bpm and 174 bpm. On the other hand, Borresen and Lambert found that the target heart rate should be reached and maintained for at least 30 minutes (2008). This means that heart rate may not be affected if exercise was not maintained for that long. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a reading of the electrical currents caused by the cardiac cycle (Kosinski, 2017). According to Dr. Kosinski, during exercise the P-T interval, the active part of the cardiac cycle, and T-P, the resting part of the cardiac cycle, shorten (Kosinski, 2009). The ECG described in Cardiovascular Physiology OMP uses three leads; one on the right wrist, one on the right forearm, and one on the left forearm (Kosinski, 2017). On the other hand, lead V5, is better at detecting effects of exercise other than those related to heart rate and can detect ischemia, low levels of oxygen in the heart
