The chart that is maintained by the American Bar Association, Commission Law and aging, shows state-by-state information on the Adult Protective Services (APS) laws for each state, the District of Columbia, Guan, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. According to the chart “abuse” is explained using the terms, abuse neglect and exploitation. Elder abuse is explained by using the terms “elder abuse” and “adult abuse”. There are seven categories listed on the chart. The categories that are used to categorize the different type of abuse is Abuse/Physical, Psychological/Emotional/Mental/Verbal Abuse, Sexual Abuse/Exploitation, Financial Exploitation, Neglect, Abandonment, and Self Neglect. Anything defined as physical abuse will be categorized into the category of Abuse/Physical Abuse. The Abuse/Physical Abuse category is a “stand-alone” category in APS statute. Meaning that it cannot be included in any other category. In Tennessee psychological abuse is defined as emotional, mental, or verbal abuse. Anything that is considered to be any one of these types of abuse can be categorized in this category. However, because this category is not a stand-alone category abuse that is categorized in this category can also be included as a part of another category of APS statute. There is one other category that Tennessee defines as a category that can be included as a part of another category of APS statute, that category is Self-Neglect. Neglect in Tennessee is an individual or stand-alone category. According to the chart Tennessee did report on information on Abandonment. The last two categories, Sexual Abuse/Exploitation and Financial Exploitation are stand-alone categories. According to Tennessee sexual abuse can be also be defined as exploitation.
