Empowerment
For People with disabilities (PWDs) to speak for themselves is one of the main goals of community-based rehabilitation. Empowerment is described as being capable of fighting for one’s rights, and being recognized and respected as equal citizens and human beings with a contribution to make. Empowerment starts from a shift in thinking from being passive receivers to active contributors.
Advocacy and Communication
This is about self-advocacy, which means knowing their rights and responsibilities, speaking up for their rights, and making choices and decisions about their lives. This is to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities and their family members in these groups. This is to enhance the strengths of PWDs, and to improve their quality of life.
Disabled People’s organization
CBR programs together with disabled people’s organizations ensure that the rights of PWDs are implemented. This also provides support to the community, where they exist or not exist, when they want to form a group.
6. Environment
One of the main goals of CBR is to have an inclusive, barrier-free, and rights-based society. An empowered PWD can become an agent of change in the removal of barrier in the physical environment, information and communication, regulations and systems, and prejudices and attitudes.
Physical Environment
To promote the participation of PWDs in the CBR Matrix, the key is to have an accessible physical environment. Moreover, environmental changes such as providing assistive devices such as hearing aids, eyeglasses, etc or modifying building structures such as providing ramps or elevators can improve PWDs participation.
