The internet in many countries is monitored and censored by the government to protect the citizens from online gambling sites and pornography. The censorship in China, however, is more noticeable than the other countries’ ones, because in China, most of the foreign websites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and others are also blocked, to prevent the citizens ruining the Chinese government’s ideology. Although internet censorship is necessary for countries to protect citizens from harmful contents, countries should not censor the internet in degree of China does because it violates citizens’ academic freedom and privacy. For example, in China "Six universities [American universities’ branch campuses in China] in our review include language in either their written agreements or other university policies that indicates a protection of academic freedom, such as permitting students to pursue research in relevant topics and allowing students to freely ask questions in the classroom" (Government Accounting Office Report.). The foreign universities’ satellite campuses in China promised their students that they permit their students to research and have opportunities to learn and be educated on any topics including China’s political issues, but they cannot keep them due to the China’s excessive censorship on the resources. Furthermore, "One university`s agreement states that all members of and visitors to the institution in China will have unlimited freedoms of expression and inquiry and will not be restricted in the selection of research, lecture, or presentation topics" (Government Accounting Office Report). One of the universities even promised the freedom of expression, and it cannot also be kept because of the internet censorship. It is because the citizens have rights to be protected from inappropriate contents such as pornography, gambling, and others; it is the government’s obligation to protect their citizens from certain harmful contents. China also applies the internet censorship with a main purpose of protecting their citizens from “vulgar” contents, but they justify such internet censorship just to keep their foundational ideology and philosophy. In other words, Chinese government believes that it will lose control of its citizens if everything, especially other political ideas, on the areas including internet should monitored and censored by the government. However, none of the countries should censor their internet in a degree that China currently does because it would violate their citizens’ freedom of learning and privacy by taking away their online anonymity as shown in multiple
