1.Curriculum should use technology but not be driven by it. Based on the information from Chapter 14, how do you interpret that statement?
Based on the information presented in Chapter 14, I interpret this statement to mean that curriculum should still be driven by content area goals and standards and technology should be used to facilitate this learning. Glatthorn (2016) says that “teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to content area (p. 506). Why is it necessary that all teachers integrate technology into their teaching? Construct your response as a principal who has been challenged by a teacher who refuses to use technology.
As an educator a key part of your job is preparing your students to be successful in the future, giving them the necessary skills to be productive members of the community and well informed citizens. In order to properly prepare our students for the 21st century, technology is essential. “The 21st century is a technology and media-driven environment and digital literacy is an essential competency for both learners and teachers (Glatthorn, 2016, p. 509).
I have heard several teachers ask “how do I teach a student who doesn’t want to learn?” Students who come in to class and stare into space, or sleep on their desks. Jensen (2013) maintains that “incorporating technology in your classroom blends the fast moving changes in the world with curriculum in ways that invite and even compel students to actively engage” (p. 149). According to Glatthorn (2016) “technology innovations are helping to enhance differentiated teaching and learning. Through a variety of new applications and programs, individual instruction can be more self-paced, and assessment tools can better gauge student progress” (p. 496). This is priceless for teachers who feel they are stretched to thin and are struggling to meet the diverse needs of all their students. Technology offers them much needed help in this area. Sometimes I feel resistance to integrating technology comes from a lack of knowledge on the subject and the extra work it involves. I would provide the teachers with data as to the numerous benefits of technology as well as Professional Development in the areas they voted to be most beneficial to their teaching. I would also discuss with them the time and work that technology could save them once implemented properly.
