Mayella’s answer of “he never touched me” to a question that wasn’t asked indicates she is protecting her father from what he was doing. I asked Mayella if she remembered Tom beating her in the face. First, she answered, “No, I don’t recall that he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me. Yes he hit – I just don’t remember.it happened too quickly”.
Tom Robinson is innocent because there is a lack of solid evidence linking him to the rape of Mayella. During the trial, Mayella claims that she screamed the whole time Tom allegedly took advantage of her; however, when Atticus questions her, she is not able to come up with any probable answers to prove Atticus’ statements wrong. Atticus asks her, “‘Why didn’t the other children hear you?’. . . ‘Or didn’t you scream until you saw your father in the window? You didn’t scream until then, did you?’”, but Mayella always has no answer to his questions (Lee 250-251).
Heck Tate was the first of the witnesses to step up and give their testimony. He described to Atticus Finch about how after see Mayella bruised and beaten on the floor, the first thing he did was to take her to identify Tom Robinson. Following this, no doctor had come to check on Mayella, despite her serious injuries and multiple wounds. On page 190 of To Kill a Mockingbird, it reads “Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor.
Tate’s testimony was that he was called by Ewell on the night of November twenty-first. He found Mayella lying on the floor in the front room, beat up. He asked her if Robinson had beat her up like that, and she said yes. He told Finch that when he took her down to the Robinson house, she identified him as the one that beat her up, so he took him
Bob Ewell called Sheriff Tate after he supposedly found Mayella. Sheriff Tate confirmed that Mayella was bruised very badly on the right side of her face. Knowing that Mr. Ewell is left-handed and Tom’s left arm was crippled did not favor Mayella’s
From the very beginning, this case has not been carried out in an honest manner, and possesses many faults as can be seen in the evidence provided today. The witness testimony not only lacks medical evidence proving that the crime ever happened in the first place, but also lacks logical argument which will no doubt have made you all feel ambiguity about the case. First of all, it is physically impossible for Tom Robinson to have beaten and raped Ms. Mayella. This is due to the fact that from the sheriff’s and Mr. Ewell’s testament, we know that Miss Mayella was beaten mostly on the right side of her body. Since it is much easier for a left handed person to hit another person on their right, we can reach the conclusion that Miss Mayella was most likely beaten by someone left handed.
Mayella claimed that she had called Tom Robinson to break down an old wardrobe for her. Mayella continued to say that she went to get him a nickel for his services, but when she turned around he attacked her and took advantage of her. Mayella’s story is similar to that of her father, Bob Ewell, but she answers inconsistently which suggests that she is making up a story on the spot. There was one important detail which proved that the Ewells were making false claims. Heck Tate, the sheriff of Maycomb County, testified that Mayella was bruised mainly on her right side.
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
Tom Robinson now sits before you, having taken oath with the only good hand he possesses- his right hand”. This goes to show that even after both Heck Tate and Mayella’s father, Bob, confirmed she was beaten on the right side, it would make more sense that the assaulter would have been mainly using his left hand because of her injuries. Atticus made it very known that Tom does not have a functioning left hand and can only use his right as his left was crippled in a mill when he was younger. Even with the jury knowing that he could not physically beat Mayella, they still accused him of being
Ewell would lie about the occurrence between Mayella and Tom. One of the first reasons Mr. Ewell would lie is he is the one who hurt his daughter. In the novel Atticus was trying to prove to the jury that it is possible that Mr. Ewell beat up his daughter. Scout says to herself, “… Atticus was trying to show, it seemed to me, that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella.”(Lee
Tom Robinson is an innocent and smart person. In the novel, Tom Robinson is being accused of rape and abuse. It is obvious and it is proved later on in the novel that Tom Robinson could not have been responsible for Mayella Ewell’s case of rape, since he only has one working arm. Another piece of evidence is when Mr. Ewell states, “‘It was her right eye, Mr.Finch . I remember now, she was bunged up on that side of her face...’”
Wounded but not Destroyed Wanda Lopez, stabbed once through the left side of her body, bled out and never knew who attacked her. The store was still and mute. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air as Carlos DeLuna searched for his daily goods at the superstore. Seconds later he paused and heard a women struggling and shouting. He then glimpsed at a man at the front counter and ran.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee, which is told from the perspective of character Jean ”Scout” Finch. The story follows the life of young Scout in the city of Maycomb, where she lives with her father Atticus and brother Jem. Throughout the novel there is a trial that is observed by the eyes of Scout Finch. In this written assignment, my aim is to further explore Tom Robinson’s character and feelings towards the trial and his conviction.
Atticus Finch, his lawyer, proves that Tom could not have raped Mayella Ewell, but her father did it. Atticus clearly conveyed to the jury that Mr. Ewell was the reason for the bruises on Mayella Ewell. As Scout Finch recollects: “Mr. Ewell wrote on the back of the envelope... The jury sat watching him…”You’re left handed Mr. Ewell, said Judge Taylor.
