“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The quote repeated among the world and sadly taken for granted. This can relate to being a good person and not judging people right when we meet or see them. It is sadly common for humans to judge too quickly and that is extremely wrong. We should give everyone a fair chance because that is what we would want from them in return. Boy 21 is a story where the main character, Finley, meets a lonely boy named Russ and judges him too quickly when he says Russ is crazy and weird. As the story continues, Russ and Finley become great friends and realize there is more to a person than meets the eye. Boy 21 uses characterization when the story talks about Russ moving to Belmont and how meeting Finley is an odd experience. Russ believes he is an extraterrestrial being is from the Cosmos and is not part of the human race and goes by the name Boy 21. Little does Finley or the rest of the high school know that Russ’s parents were killed and he lives a lifestyle as Boy 21 to cope with his feelings. Finley and the rest of the school believe Russ is a weird person who is partially crazy. Finley wants nothing to do with Russ. As the story goes on, Finley and Russ become better friends and almost become the same personality. Finley realizes he was too quick to judge Russ because he is actually a kind, friendly, and caring person. Luella Jones to convey the same theme to not judge a book by its cover and looks can be deceiving. The story begins with Roger, who we believe is homeless and lives alone, running up behind Mrs. Jones and attempting to steal her pocketbook. The weight of the purse causes him to trip and fall while attempting to run away. Mrs. Jones catches her thief and begins to scold Roger. Mrs. Jones offers to bring Roger to her home to wash his face. She is even kind enough to feed him a meal. But what is surprising is that Mrs. Jones leaves Roger alone for few seconds with her pocketbook out in the open and the door open with a path escape. But Mrs. Jones trusts Roger enough to do this on purpose. After being interrogated for a bit, Roger confesses that he stole the pocketbook so he could get some new shoes. After dinner, Mrs. Jones know Roger is homeless and lonely so she gives him money to buy himself some new shoes. This shows characterization because it shows how both people are kindhearted and that you cannot judge someone right when you meet
