Drug addiction is a ravaging full time occupation for anyone who finds themselves in that profession. Addict’s lifestyles become so consumed with getting high their reality revolves around getting high. How does someone decide to live this lifestyle? Throughout “Chasing The Scream” Hari cites many personal stories addicts reveal to him about their drug life. I believe after reading this book there are a few huge variables that can in a complex way build someone up to turn into an addict. Knowing what these variables are and understanding how to combat them can ultimately play the biggest role in drug abuse prevent and intervention. Becoming an addict normally isn’t a choice that comes out of nowhere. A person’s character is molded by their life experience and environment gradually over time to become an addict. According to book 90 % of people who use drugs aren’t addicted (Hari 152). Why is that? In the cases of so many addicts their adolescent years were plagued by trauma, instability, or abuse. During childhood our brains aren’t fully developed and the habits and way we think are still growing. According to the Adverse Childhood Study adolescents who’ve suffered a traumatic experience are four times more likely to become drug addicts (Hari 160). I think the most potent form is primary prevention which are efforts to the start of drug use. It is easier to change someone’s attitude away from drugs before their brains become hardwired to be physically and mentally dependent to it. Finding out is who are the at risk people is the first and likely most difficult part to primary prevention. Someone who is antisocial isn’t likely to seek out assistance or confrontation in any manner, but if that person got help in building social skills and relationships it would ultimately reduce the likelihood that they become addicted to a
