Despite being one of the most impactful genres of its time, there isn't a fully accurate portrayal of gangster rap's history. The origins of the genre, as we know it today, lie in 1988 when the rap group N.W.A. released its seminal album Straight Outta Compton. The album received praise and much more scrutiny but it's brutally honest depiction of life in South Central Los Angeles captured the attention of the nation's youth. However, the subject matter of N.W.A.'s music created an exaggerated image for them and every other artist that partook in the genre. Along with the rise of gangster rap there was an increase in the public’s awareness of street gangs.

Many Chicano rappers have been heavily influenced by Mexican history, including many themes relevant to the Mexican and Chicano people living in the United States and Mexico. Chicano rap is mainly enjoyed by hip hop listeners in the United States. Chicano rap's ability to reach large audiences without mainstream airplay or media promotion is due largely in part to nationwide lowrider car tours and their accompanying concerts headlined by Chicano rappers.
From Mexican heroes like Pancho Villa, to vintage lowriders, an eyesore to Anglos who are unaware of the complexity of Chicanx culture. Chicanxs are not confined to society’s preconceived notions that define what it means to be a Mexican-American. Chicanx art is separate from Anglo art, unneeded for the white gaze; it is experiences, spirituality, history, love, and expression of self. The Chicano Movement of the 1960s was the response to the oppression and discrimination of Mexican-Americans in the United States. The movement fueled an emergence of Chicanx art that countered dominant narratives perpetuated by society.

Very similarly to rhythm and blues, rock and roll and the Civil Rights Movement inspired hip hop in a variety of different ways, as African American artists worked to find a space for themselves in the music industry. Not many people find a correlation between African Americans and Rock and Roll, but there’s surprisingly a deep history, and it’s not just white people who developed this specific genre, but there was African American-centered and ghetto-centered versions of rock and roll. “There are enough similarities between, for instance, rock & roll and commercial rap, especially rock rap, to make a case for critically engaging them as interracial arenas where black and white youths, among others, put forward messages and advanced ideals that have been not only informed by the Civil Rights Movement and the Hip Hop Movement, respectively, but in turn, even if only implicitly, have influenced the rhetoric, politics, and aesthetics of these movements” (Rabaka 99).
