In 1870, child abuse was first introduced by the events that happened to an eight year old, named Mary Ellen Wilson, who was experiencing several beatings in the home of her biological father and step-mother, in Great Britain. During the 1870’s Mary experienced extreme beating, and was removed from the home (Walkins, 1990). Mary’s story started in 1874, while living with her biological father’s new wife Mary McCormack Connolly. Mrs. Connolly would beat the child, and would not provide for Mary’s basic welfare. It was not until Etta Wheeler, a Methodist mission who visited the home that Mary’s abuse was first confirmed the abuse of a child.
The book said that abused children are at high risk of damage to the central nervous system and of maldevelopment of ego function. What is child Maltreatment? Child maltreatment is the act of commission or omission by a parent or caregiver (clergy, coach, teacher) that results in harm of a child’s wellbeing or threat of harm towards a child. Acts of commission (child abuse) include the following maltreatment types: Physical, Sexual, and Psychological/emotional Abuse. The act of omission is the failure to provide for a child’s basic physical, psychological, or educational needs or to protect a child from potential harm.
Emotional neglect – “failure to provide adequate nurturing and affection to a child or the refusal or delay in ensuring that the child received the needed treatment for behavioural problems. One of, if not the most important issue regarding child welfare is the role parents play in their children’s lives. A major issue facing the protection of children is lack of proper parenting education. According to research by the National Children’s Alliance “More than 3 million American children are investigated for child maltreatment each year. " The site also states that “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually" and even more alarming statics is that “In 2016, an estimated 1,750 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.” A major part of this issue stems from parents who overwhelmed or are underprepared to be parents lacking the proper resources and parental knowledge to take care of their children.
