Childhood obesity has increased a substantial amount in the United States. The progressive childhood obesity rate should be taken as a heavy concern this obesity tends to affect these children in adulthood. The article Physical therapy as treatment for childhood obesity in primary health care, Dominique Hansen, states that “the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has increased by 3- to 4-fold over the last 3 decades in the United States.” The United States is not the only country where you can find this same problem happening. In Europe, current rates of overweight or obesity are between 8% and 13% in preschool children (Hansen). Obesity puts these children at all kinds of health risk. Childhood obesity should be taken very seriously because we are talking about an individual’s life. Prevention tactics and a proactive approach should be taken to insure a positive change and turn around in this childhood obesity epidemic. Dominique Hansen states that, “To generate fat mass loss in children and adolescents with obesity, an increase in caloric expenditure (activity promotion) and a reduction in caloric intake are important”. So, children and parents should be educated in how to exercise and how to eat a balanced healthy diet. Schools should be providing the education that children and young adults need to live a healthy lifestyle. When I was in grade school this kind of education was not provided until I reached high school. I feel like this kind of education should be provided at a much younger age but made to where it is fun for children
