Imagine being at school and instead of learning about how to write and do math you learned about what to believe and how to survive the war. Children during WW2 were taught on a daily basis what to believe and what to think and how to dress. Hitler’s youth were being raised with Hitler’s beliefs and ideas being drilled into their brains at school, home and were being shown how to live by having to attend community book burnings and pep rally’s against the jews and special schools whose main goal is to teach children about war.

When the war started children were required to go to a Hitler School where they were taught everything about war and how bad Jews were.In the schools they were taught of the “horrible” things the jews did and the horrible people that they were. Leisels first day she had been beaten a few times by her teacher and even beaten up a few kids herself. These schools were very “stressful environments for both children and instructors”(“Indoctrinating Youth”.3). Nazi soldiers would gather books that had to do with jewish “beliefs and ideas” or even books jewish authors/philosophers/scientist or doctors wrote(Indoctrinating Youth 3)..Although at the time no one really knew what was going on in the concentration camps Hitler felt he had to prove himself to his people and book burnings was a good way to do so (1933 Book Burnings.4). They would set the books on fire and “the head soldier would give ‘speeches’” on how bad the jews were and what good this book burning was doing (Indoctrinating Youth 3). These would usually take place once a month but their is one that specifically stands out. The biggest book burning that ever took place was on the night of April,16,2015 (Hitler’s Birthday) (Indoctrinating Youth 3). In the book Thief Liesel attends this burning and steals a book and hides it under her shirt it is described that the book was,”eating her up.(Zusak 46).” On this day in the book Liesel personally declares war against Hitler. Many people were angry their favorite “Authors,Poets and Philosophers books were being burned” but they couldn't show their true feelings (Indoctrinating Youth 3).
