Throughout history, Christian extremists have interpreted the Bible in such ways so as to give justification for violence. The same could be said for Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and several other religions. Under the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I, many non-monotheistic people were violently and forcefully converted to Christianity. There were also several “anti-pagan laws” that were decreed and enforced. Under the Byzantine Empire, many Jewish populations were persecuted based solely on their religion and theological differences. Many had to flee to the Sassanian Empire in the Middle East. One of the first things he did at Medina was create a peace agreement between the Muslims, Jews, and two tribes of the town, so that everyone would be able to live and practice peacefully. From 622 to 632, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was able to spread the teachings of Islam, not by force, to many parts of the Arabian peninsula. During this time, Meccans, along with other tribes and “states” waged war on a few occasions against Muslims. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was not a violent man and did not preach violence, but through revelations from God, he was commanded to fight the disbelievers to defend Islam. Prophet Muhammad, also, preached in general not to attack the enemy unless attacked upon. Many times, the enemy would break an agreement with the Muslims made in the past or would be on the offensive, which would cause these battles, as well. After the Prophet’s (pbuh) death in 632 A.D, his companions went on to succeed him, not really as spiritual and religious leaders because God chose Muhammad (pbuh) as the final prophet and messenger, but as political and military leaders. First, many Muslims today only consider the first four caliphs from 632 to 661 to be true and righteous caliphs. After 661, the position of the caliph became dynastic, corrupt, and king-like. Secondly, during many of the Arab/Islamic conquests, the conquered were not forced to convert to Islam. They were given the option to convert to Islam or pay a tax if they were people of the Book (Christians or Jews).
