Columbus – Hero or Villain Many school teachers nowadays teach their students not to honor Christopher Columbus, but to shun him. This is wrong in so many ways. Many people decide not to honor Columbus because he abuses the Native Americans while on his journey in the Americas. What many people forget, though, because they live such comfortable lives here in the United States, is that Columbus had courage. Even though Christopher Columbus took advantage of the natives, it is important that all Americans honor him for his courage. A common question asked in the very politically correct 21st century is, “Why admire a man who was searching for gold and tolerant of slavery? This is what many college campuses all across the United States are like today. The students and teachers there are so brainwashed by the politically correct environment that they live in, that they forget the “bright side” of the story. Since the world today is so politically correct and everyone has to be “nice,” only care about one side of the story. The truth is, Columbus did not treat the Native Americans well. He treated them terribly. The thing is, that is all the politically correct people think. They leave out one tiny little detain: that Columbus discovered the Americas for Europe and is the reason so many people live such great lives today in peace. He also says that Columbus “was quite evil” (“Columbus Day — a holiday without a hero” 1). During and after the Holocaust, in which over six million Jews along with millions of other were killed, many people fled Europe. A great amount of those people came to the United States, with the dream of having a better life. They wanted to pursue the American Dream. They wanted to live a comfortable life with freedom; not being told what to do and how to live the government. My grandparents fled the horrors of Europe and came to the United States dreaming of living a better life. Their dream came true. They ended up living a very comfortable life in New York. They were working-class, but they were happy and that was all that mattered to them. Without Columbus’ discovery, there would not have been an “American Dream” because there would not have been an America. Columbus began the creation of America. Columbus’ arrival could have led to millions of unintentional deaths, but imagine how many lives the U.S. has saved. America has done so many great things for the world, such as, fighting for freedom in WWII, helping the innocent victims of terrorism in Afghanistan, attempting to end world conflicts and create peace, and so
