I examined how various characters dealt with loss. I chose these texts to gain understanding on how characters lead themselves to acceptance and overcoming the loss. The texts I examined include; How could you leave us by NF(Nathan Feuerstein), American Sniper by Clint Eastwood, the episode Clear in The Walking Dead by Frank Darabont and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. I expect that all of my texts will share similar approaches as characters deal with emotion after loss. In the texts Clear and American Sniper, both characters experience denial and anger. In addition, I expected Bridge to Terabithia and How could you leave us to share themes of sorrow and light depression. In the visual text Clear - an episode of The Walking Dead - by Frank Darabont, Morgan experiences denial and anger upon the loss of his son due to his zombified wife. Whilst taking part in the many tours in Iraq, he encounters many cases of loss. Chris is in denial as he remains in war trying to prevent further suffering. Upon reaching home, his anger towards insurgents follows him. After receiving love from his family, he repairs himself emotionally. In How Could You Leave Us the songwriter loses the opportunity to receive love from his mother. Nathan encounters great sorrow and sinks into depression until he uses music to overcome his loss. Bridge To Terabithia. Jess’s loss impacts him greatly. He loses his guidance and a sense of belonging in the world. His sorrow creates doubts that he can reexperience those feelings. Upon building a bridge between his two worlds, he accepts the loss of his friend as this symbolises his strength and independence. In today’s society, sorrow, anger and denial are all emotions people experience in order to reach acceptance. Upon receiving guidance, love or a sense of belonging, we can overcome these
