Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BCE in Alexandria. During the early years of her life Egypt was in great turmoil and the central power was unstable. After 25 years of turmoil under several rulers Egypt was recaptured by Ptolemy XII with eh help of Rome. The throne was restored to Ptolemy XII Auletes, Cleopatra’s father, and she was chosen as the deputy of her father at the age of 14. After Ptolemy XII died Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII were chosen as joint monarchs in accordance to their father’s will. Thought they were joint monarchs and married, Cleopatra assumed complete control over Egypt and dropped all mention of her husband. The plan worked and she soon became his mistress giving birth to a child named Caesarion. This caused Caesar to favour her and backed her claim to the throne. After defeating Ptolemy XIII, Caesar placed Cleopatra as ruler and her brother Ptolemy XIV as co-ruler. Cleopatra, Ptolemy XIV, and her son all visited Rome where Caesar and Cleopatra’s relationship was made obvious to the Roman public. After four years in 44 BCE Caesar was assassinated and Cleopatra and the others she came with returned home where Ptolemy XIV died. Cleopatra made her son heir to the throne and co-regent. During the Roman civil war between the supporters of Caesar and the assassin of Caesar Cleopatra sided with the supporters of Caesar because of her past. In 41 BCE after Caesar’s supports won, Mark Anthony wanted to know who Cleopatra’s loyalty lied with. Cleopatra upon arriving to Rome charmed Anthony so much that they started an affair much like that of Julius Caesar’s.
