Professionalism in any industry is paramount. Customer and employee relationships are important to ensure company goals and visions are obtained which are accomplished through professionalism. It establishes boundaries between appropriate and inappropriate behavior, conversations, interactions with clients, co-workers, and superiors, as well as dress code and appearance. Also, respect for diversity and culture is ever increasing as business has become global. Code of Ethics acts as a guide and reference for employees, providing support during daily decision making. They clearly define an organization’s mission, values, and principles. It complements an organizations rules and regulations and defines acceptable ethical environment. As business continues to change and the world becomes more complex, code of ethics will continually develop and adapt to address global issues. Its purpose is to endorse honesty, protect assets, promote productivity, encourage teamwork, maintain/improve company image, create empowerment, develop accountability, ensure transparency, foster a drug free workplace, secure proprietary information, and command respect. Its members range from owners, engineers, architects, contractors, educators, students, and anyone involved in the construction industry. Their Code of Ethics is a short generic list of ten statements each consisting of one to two sentences. It briefly covers the following: client service, representation of qualifications and availability, standards of practice, fair competition, conflicts of interest, fair compensation, release of information, public welfare, professional development, and integrity of the profession (CMAA, 2015).
