Therapeutic Relationships
The development and conservation of interpersonal relationships are central to the Latina/o culture (Sue & Sue, 2015, p. 534). This concept can also apply when developing therapeutic relationships with Latino clients.
Developing therapeutic relationships, is a process that cannot be rushed or forced. In the case of working with the Latina/o community, this concept rings especially true. According to Klein (1969) & Paniagua (1998), demonstrating interpersonal warmth is very important for developing the therapeutic relationship with the Latino population (as cited in Aviera, n.d., para. 2). The most effective approach, when developing therapeutic relationships with Latino clients, is being open and willing to disclose minor personal information, which allows the client to see the therapist as genuine, real person (Aveira, n.d.). …show more content…

Jose seems to struggle with not having many personal relationships, outside of his family. Working to cultivate a warm therapeutic relationship can help Jose to become more comfortable in cultivating friendships and relationships in his personal life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving (Martin, 2018, para.1). CBT aims to change unconscious thought patterns, beliefs, attitudes, and ultimately behavior, which allows the person to face difficulties and more effectively strive toward goals (Ackerman, 2017).
Jose can greatly benefit from changing some of his negative thoughts surrounding his previous actions of asking an old girlfriend to get an abortion. While it is important to respect his religious beliefs, this toxic black and white thinking has deeply affected his current mental health status.
