Since I was a young child, I have been fascinated by science—I have always been eager to learn and understand how the world around me works. I plan to major in physics while minoring in computer science at the University of Vermont. I chose the field of physics because physics is the most fundamental of all the sciences and would be rewarding for me to study since its status as the most elementary science would satisfy my curiosity as I learned and would continue to enthrall me as I found new questions to ask.
To prepare myself to excel in my studies of physics, computer science, gender studies, and other subject areas that I plan to explore, I devoted my high school career to equipping myself with the knowledge, skills, and experience that I would need for a university education. I came out as a transgender man halfway through my high school career. My life as a transgender man in my school was not easy due to the discrimination that I faced from the school’s administration. While the discrimination I faced was frustrating, it further motivated me to fight for the rights of other lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and otherwise non-heterosexual students in my school. In 2015, I founded and served as the president of my school’s LGBTQ+ club, which functioned as a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and helped educate all students on the issues that our community faces. I have also established myself as an advocate through additional actions; for example, I filed a discrimination complaint against my school with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights in order to protect other students from the ill-treatment that I
