My journey throughout Police Powers has been an educational one, I feel like I have learned a lot not only about the police but about myself and my views. In the beginning of the semester, I did not like this class because it started at 8:00 am. I found it hard to pay attention since I had no intention to become a police officer. I started the Justice Studies program because I wanted to become a lawyer. I had considered policing, however I always assumed being a small woman that people would not take me seriously and I would not be able to defend myself. This is the wrong mindset to have, as long as you are not lazy and put the work in to stay fit and strong it does not matter. The videos that we watched at the beginning of class made me think about if I really do have what it takes to do the job. The videos taught me that you should never go into a situation expecting something to happen because in truth you never know what will happen. You can be pulling someone over for speeding and they can pull a gun out on you. A career in policing is dangerous but one of the best benefits apart from good pay is that it allows you to help and protect others that need it. After taking this class, my views have definitely changed, and I am considering pursuing a career in policing. Specifically, I find that although law is interesting the content is dry and I want to be learning more hands-on. That is what I liked about this class, of course we had to learn the content, but I was able to connect the content to the activities we did in class. For example, when we did practicum number three search and arrest, I applied what I had read from the PowerPoint slides to the real life arrest I had to conduct.
