Leadership has played an important part in my life for the longest time. When I was younger I would always make sure that people were doing the right thing, and if they weren't, I wasn’t afraid to tell them and help them out. One of my first leadership opportunities was in third grade. I had just moved to a new school and didn’t know anyone, but I still decided to run for school vice-president. I used my ability to lead and ended up winning by a landslide. Ever since then I’ve known that leadership was something that I value dearly. As a section leader, I will have the chance to work closely with fellow musicians and help them to achieve their highest potential to not just benefit them but the whole band. During this process I can strengthen my leadership skills, such as organization, communication, and problem-solving, which is helpful not just in band, but in the rest of my life as well. Being a section leader requires commitment and dedication, which I am willing to provide, because I know that the rewards are worth it. Being a member of the instrument committee requires someone to be incredibly responsible and organized, as well as have a knowledge on how instruments work. Responsibility and organization are one of the many things necessary in my-day-to-day life for me to stay on top of work and be successful. Responsibility is something that I had a hard time achieving a few years ago, but as I started to become more organized I also became more responsible. I struggled with forgetting about things, but making lists and using calendars assisted me in being less forgetful. Additionally, learning new instruments is a passion of mine, and I would say that I have a good understanding for how most of them work. As a member of the instrument committee, I will ensure that instruments are in good working order, properly maintained, and available for use when needed. This is highly essential to the success of the Bowie Band, as instruments that do not properly function can have a horrible impact on the quality of the music. I will also make sure that any checked-out instruments will be returned on time and in the same condition that they were given. Having to keep track of who has what instrument is crucial to maintaining the instrument conditions and inventory in the Bowie Band.
