In the status quo, there are countless evident problems, and all of them can never be solved. The people we live among, our society, make us who we are. For me, my identity is my community, and so, I believe it is each and every one of our duties to further ourselves through bettering the world around us. Thus, my long-range goal is to help the general population in the future, and for me, this would be through science. Diseases are always emerging, viruses are always adapting, and infections are always getting more potent. The continual change in technology introduces new ways to solve problems, but it also introduces difficulties when it comes to finding solutions, because new technology brings its own set of problems with it. To accomplish this, I am determined to go to medical school and become a practicing physician. I also hope to research alongside my practice. I have met several doctors who do exactly that, and they have become my role models. As a physician, I can help one person at a time. Thus, impacting countless lives on a more personal level, which is something I saw Dr. Selby do when I interned with him. This connection between doctor and patient is much deeper than anything one can achieve through research. As a practicing physician, I would also have the opportunity to apply any research I have studied or read about. For researchers, to get helpful results and actually produce a working drug could take years. So, even though in the end one can save countless lives, while the research process is going, one’s impact on humanity and its problems is minimal. Being a physician would allow me to help patients on a daily basis, even if it is not a lot of people. However, the fact that research takes a long time does not discourage me from my goal of partaking in it. I see so many opportunities to help the global population through research, and I would love to be part of the effort to further what we know about
