In 7th grade, I transferred from Bryan Middle school to Visitation Catholic School and there was not enough room in the accelerated math program, which ultimately set me behind. In high school, I found myself bored in math and knew I needed to challenge myself, so I ended up setting up a meeting with the math department head and we discussed my options. Sophomore year, I ended up taking two math classes, which was not easy; double the test, quizzes and lessons! However, by taking two math classes, I was able to get myself into a higher math class which ultimately was my goal, and achieving it was an amazing feeling.

Upward Bound Math and Science Upward Bound Math and Science is a program designed to strengthen the math and science skills of students in 9th to12th grade and generates the skills necessary for post-secondary programs leading to science, technology, engineering and math careers. I have always been interested in careers with a focus on math and science. Growing up I always wanted to be a scientist, but as I grow and leaned more what I want and be when I grow up changes more often, as a now I want and be a Biotechnologist. UBMS has helped me with this decision. There I spent six weeks of my summer for four years.
Beyond math and science, there are a few other hobbies I have. I am particularly musical; playing instruments and singing have been a piece of my life since I was small. In the time following when I started drawing a few years ago, I have improved rapidly. Currently in drama, I am the assistant director of the class play. As a person in that position, I have become more sociable and confident.
Ever since my grandmother died with lymphoma, I have been very interested in biology because I want to find a cure for cancer. Before going into biology, I did not think that biology involved math skills, however, it did not take me long to learn that it is very important to have a good understanding in math to do well in a science course. I have an altruistic component to my character which includes coaching elementary children, tutoring others, and volunteering at school, blood drives and with the community. I am the president of my high school’s Math Club, which entails numerous hours of organizing and volunteering. Through careful planning, I am able to bring in a wide variety of students, all of whom carry distinct characteristics. It is because of Math Club they have been brought out of their comfort zones and have built new connections with students they have never spoken to before. Math Club provides tutoring services as well.
As a child I always desired to study math and science. There is just something about solving problems, and finding solutions that catches my attention. Learning about the world, and how it function is very interesting to me. These subjects have help keep me wondering what I could learn next, and the reason being that I am a scholar in my classes. Sexism in the twentieth century was very much alive, women were expected to serve their husbands and take care of the children. The stories “Wall of Fire Rising”, “Fiesta”, and “Giaconda Smile” use marriage to portray the sexism that we are accustomed to. They show a pattern of male dominance and a state of patriarchy. This type of portrayal by the authors may be on purpose to show an ugly aspect of our society.
In life I have noticed leadership to be a key attribute of mine. This was not a quality I would seek to obtain, it was more like one bestowed upon me. Growing up I was the second oldest and only daughter of four children. Though we were rich in spirit, financial hardships made it difficult and at times impossible to fulfill the basic needs and wants of most kids. With the odds stacked against us, I began at a young age to realize that I had to take charge, I had to make a change, I had to lead.
My love of math comes from the challenging equations. I enjoy a challenge and for me, math can be challenging. At times, I may come off as an awkward person but in reality, I do not know what to say, most of the times. My mind goes everywhere and I can get easily distracted. I am a friendly and compassionate person.
Then, in 5th grade, I took pre-algebra, and I realized that math could be taught in an interesting way. Since then, I have wanted to fix math education, and help students learn math better.
As I said before, my favorite and most successful subject is mathematics. This category goes hand in hand with the visual spatial style, because by taking those skills I can create formulas and symbols that allow for me to understand complex problems more simply. Not only can this be seen in class but I also like to problem solve. Whether that be a puzzle, an issue with technology, or even just issues with people.
While I am pretty good at intuitively finding solutions to problems, in a 30-question test, or during normal class time, I often find that true understanding can be put on the backburner. I really love truly understanding a concept, as it gives me great satisfaction when I can finally intuitively visualize a situation in math and science. I love math and science at my high school, and I appreciate the immense breadth of opportunities offered (I’m currently taking pre-calc and honors physics, and aim to take AP Physics and AP Calculus next year). Math is my favorite subject in school because of its countless uses in everyday situations, necessity in businesses and the economy, and how it challenges myself and others to solve complex problems. One reason mathematics is my favorite subject is because it can easily be associated with numerous everyday tasks. Sure, not every lesson acquired in class is going to play a role in a future career, but many of the skills learned will be put to use at some point in life. For example, it is essential to use math skills when baking to ensure that the ingredients are properly measured out, otherwise, the end result will not be close to what is expected.
