Websters dictionary defines education as “the action or process of teaching someone especially in a school, college, or university”. However, there is a second definition under education: “the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university.” These two descriptions of the same word effectively summarize varying perspectives on education.
While some may say, merely by attending school you are getting an education. I tend to disagree. If an education is, in fact, based on your knowledge, skill, and understanding, if would seem to me that going to school is not the only action one must take to be considered an educated person. In this way, the changes in our education system that are happening right now may be beneficial. By creating certain requirements for teachers, the Common Core system effectively forces students to be accountable for their educations.
On the other hand, there are many aspects of public education that are changing for the worse. One problem I find is the “one size fits all” attitude that is increasingly finding its way into our schools. I believe that this could not be any farther from the truth. I have had the good luck of being taught by some amazing teachers who allowed me to expand not only the mass of information I have, but the skills I need to truly comprehend what I am taught. There are certainly areas of my education where I feel that I am lacking, but as I continue my education I intend to fill in those gaps. I am confident that the education I have today was not simply a result of coming into the school each day. I can on really be educated I take the initiative to learn. Even with a good teacher it was crucial for to put effort into both school work and learning about other topics that I am genuinely interested
