What is depression?, well depression is a mood disorder that causes negative feelings. The person gets sad and starts loosing interest in things that he/or she usually enjoys. Some people handle depression differently, but the outcomes are usually the same. In the article “College Athletes May Be More Depressed Than You Think”, Schreiber, Katherine states that not because you play a sport it means that you won’t be getting depressed. Many people (like me) think that exercising, keeping yourself busy playing a sport will keep your mind from negative thoughts that causes a person to get depressed, but it is not entirely true according with Schreiber. I was a cheerleader for four years throughout my high school years and although it was fun and cheerleaders were supposed to be happy and transmitting positive vibes I was sad most of the time. When ever I cheered on football games, basketball games, or just rallies, and cheer competitions I was putting a fake smile and I was the happiest girl while wearing my uniform. I never showed I was sad and that I was going through so much outside school. Not to mention that cheerleading had to do a lot with my depression. Cheerleading was something I loved so much, but at the same time it affected me so much. Getting all the extra pressure from my coach wasn’t easy. Getting out of my house at 7:00 am and not coming back home till 7 or 8 pm was tiring. My body image was very important throughout high school. To be in the teach you couldn’t gain weight, at the beginning of each year, everybody would get measured and weighed to make sure we didn't gain weight and to see how much weight we would lose throughout the year. As a cheerleader we worked out a lot, we had days we would even work out with the football players. That is why I agree with Katherine Schreiber, because I went through so much as a athletic that caused me to get sad. Since her argument is scientifically proven I think her argument and facts were good. I really like this
