Here’s a scenario for you: a college football player that is very successful and does some great things for his program, however he doesn’t benefit at all from jersey sales. Is this fair or not? For many years now many people have discussed whether collegiate athletes should get paid or not. Arguments for might say that they should get paid to compensate for their jersey sales or autographs. Others against the idea would say that the budget cuts would be too big. I believe college athletes shouldn’t get paid because it would be an unfair advantage to bigger schools, it would hurt the regular students and staff, and it would cause budget cuts in the school. Let’s face it some schools have more money set to sports than others. So if college athletes started getting paid some schools would be better off than others. Lets say that a kid from Sioux Falls that excels at football decides he wants to play football in college. If student athletes got paid that student would be more likely to play at a school like Alabama versus a smaller school closer to home that wouldn’t pay him quite as much like University of South Dakota. The problem with this is that all of the elite athletes would be going to a handful of schools across the country and those teams would just dominate year after year. If college athletes were getting paid, more than likely other students would have to pay more in tuition and in other fees. Athletes getting paid would create the misunderstanding that getting an education would be less important than trying to get involved in a sport. The importance of academics would go straight down the drain. Along with all of these points, the majority of college athletes already technically get paid through scholarship money. So where is the need to pay them more money than what it is worth to get a college
