Most people do not know what commercial surrogacy is or how it severely affects individuals. By definition, surrogate motherhood is when a woman gets impregnated with another couple’s embryo or genetic material in order to be able to bear a child. This method is used for couples who are unable to reproduce, and for this reason surrogate mothers are paid for the practice. The question of whether the suffering of a childless woman is greater than that of the surrogate mother who is forced to abandon her baby resides. In this case, Mary Beth Whitehead saw an add in the newspaper and decided to be a surrogate mother. However, she was unaware that the baby would be biologically hers, meaning that she used her own eggs. The intended parents met with her, and they signed a commission contract. However, when the baby was born, Mary Beth had an immediate connection with the baby and decided she wanted to keep it. Mary Beth was supposed to receive payment of $10,000 for the birth of a healthy baby, which she did not take. She felt that she could not forgive herself if her biological daughter grew up with the knowledge that her mother had sold her. The intended parents got a judge involved to seize baby M from Mary Beth’s custody. The police showed up at their door, and Mary Beth and her husband managed to run away with Baby M. After threats, disappearing, and many issues, Mary Beth and her husband finally found a lawyer, and they went to court. At the end of the whole situation, the intended parents ended up with custody of the child. The baby was taken from Mary Beth’s custody (Rayven Perkins NP). There are many other surrogacy stories similar to this one, but it is easy to conclude that commercial surrogacy can cause many serious issues within the surrogate, as well as the intended family. Surrogates are often taken advantage of, and get abandoned by the intended family once the baby is handed over. This can cause extreme emotional difficulties for all of the people involved, including the baby. When the baby is all grown up, it is likely they will also be emotionally unstable.
