Community Credit Union is a credit union that services the community of Androscoggin County, Maine. One of the ways this credit union lives up to its mission statement is that it was formed as a co-operative and therefore, it is owned by its members. The credit union was originally formed in 1945 by a group from St. Peter and St. Paul to fill a need for financial services for their parishioners. Under the Credit Union laws of the State of Maine, a group of these parishioners were able to vote to incorporate. Those on March 6, 1945 the credit union was born. Initially, membership was limited to church parishioners from St. Paul and St. Peter. As time went on their field of membership was expanded to include those who live, work, or attend school in the Lewiston area. After this change, the credit union’s name was changed to Community Credit Union. By 1994, the credit union had once again changed its memberships common bond. Pierre Credit Union and it was operated out of the treasurer’s house. It wasn’t until 1949 when they finally established an office location. Here their members could conduct business on Monday and Friday. Today, they now serve members throughout the Androscoggin County in three convenient locations and can conduct their business Monday through Saturday. In addition, this credit union also participates in shared branching which allows their members to go to other credit unions throughout the United States and deposit, withdraw, or even make a loan payment to their Community Credit Union account. If they want to go on an Alaskan vacation but need to access their account back home in Maine (over 4000 miles or 6337 kilometers away), they can just stop by any credit union in Alaska that participates in shared branching and access their account.
