George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a story that represents the rise of Stalin, as well as his many threats. In Animal Farm, we see Animal Farm turn from a free place where animals held their own, to a communist workplace over Napoleon’s rule, much like Joseph Stalin did during his rule. Stalin caused fear so nobody would try to take over, much like Napoleon. Stalin and Napoleon both did horrible things, causing fear and terror, and sometimes even did the same things. Stalin was a terrible human being. He would prove time and time again that he should not be in charge, but the most well known bit of him misusing his powers would be the “Show Trials”. During the “Show Trials”, Stalin would arrest many, and make them confess to outrageous crimes, some even without trial, just like Napoleon. Napoleon would force innocent animals to come up to a stage and confess to crimes, then let the dogs slaughter them. This quote from The Stalin Purges and Show Trials will provide extra evidence that he would make people confess to horrible things, “Often based on forced confessions, the trials made a mockery of the idea of due process of law.”(1). Stalin achieved this by confiscating grain crops from peasants. In chapter 7 of Animal Farm, we see Napoleon force the hens to give him their eggs or starve. As The Stalin Purges and Show Trials said in their text, “Massive food and consumer shortages plagued the Soviet people. To increase trade exports, Stalin ordered the government to confiscate all grain crops from Soviet peasants. As a result, 5 million died of starvation.”(1) It is clearly stated that Stalin starved out Soviet peasants to get what he wanted, just as Napoleon starved out the hens to get what he wanted, but sometimes Napoleon and Stalin would do much
