Softball vs. Baseball These two sports have been around for a very long time. They are part of our pastime and will always be part of the sports we play today. They have become the top sports that we watch today. Ever since the 1870’s when they started it has just gotten bigger and bigger. While softball is not as big and does not have a national league it is getting better. Baseball came to us from Britain and is a variation of two games, Rounders and Cricket. By the time of the American Revolution, boys were playing it in school yards all across the Americas. In September of 1845, a group of New York City man founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. They made the game somewhat safer (they abolished he act of throwing the ball directly at someone to throw them out.) In 1846 the Knickerbocker’s played their first game against a team of cricket players (Staff). The field itself is bigger and the bases are farther apart in baseball then they are in softball. This gives the defending team time to field the ball and still have time to throw out the runners. Baseball fields have grass in the infield where in softball it does not. The grass helps the ball slow down so that it is not going so fast right towards the infielders. Also the pitchers in baseball pitch off of a lifted mount of dirt instead of off of the flat ground. They pitch over hand and throw the ball downwards while softball pitchers have a wind up and throw it underhand. It is easier for a baseball pitcher to move the ball and throw different types of pitches than it is for a softball pitcher. The baseball itself is smaller and are easier to move when it comes at the batter faster than a softball. The softball is bigger and heavier and has less time to move to where it needs to
