Revolutions in history are usually sparked by the minorities’ want and need for either all of a few of the following: freedom (political, social, religious), financial burdens, or equality. In the cases of the American and French revolution, the two wanted equality and reform of taxation. The American revolution was further pushed by their initial flee for religious freedom and French pushed by debt and opposition between the church and state. The American Revolution first began in 1775 with the Battle of Lexington. With eight American soldiers laying dead, the war had begun. Despite their similar causes and approach to rebellion, the outcome of these two revolutions took different turns. The Treaty of Paris signed on September 3, 1783 marked the end of the American revolution. This treaty allowed the colonies to officially gain their independence from Great Britain letting the form the United States of America. The Americans formed their own government and formed their own laws. The French revolution finally ended with Napoleon’s failed invasion of Russia in 1812. The aftermath of the French revolution left France with a new sense of nationalism, the Napoleonic Code, the end of feudalism, help with their economic recovery, and new schools. The difference in outcomes of these wars could be due to the fact that the American revolution had less involvement other than help from France than the French revolution or because America did not help France in their revolution. Either way, both revolutions were pivotal for creating the nations formed today.
