It can be argued that the Missouri Compromise not only put off the start of the Civil War, but was also a cause. Many contributing factors led up to the Civil War in the years following the passing after the Missouri Compromise. Years after the Missouri Compromise went into effect, Congress passed the Tariff Act of 1833, sometimes called the Compromise Tariff. This was proposed by Henry Clay, and called for the gradual reduction of tariffs, ending the Nullification Crisis. In 1846, United States’ President James Polk requested 2 million dollars to purchase land from Mexico following the Mexican-American War.

So, this essay will explain one from the other. The Missouri Compromise has many differences from the Compromise of 1850. One difference would be that in breaking up the different parts of the Louisiana Territory, it created peace between Northerners and Southerners. The Northerners were happy that more territory was safe for freed slaves, although they weren't quite happy that there was still slavery in the USA. However, the southerners stayed happy until the Southerners realized that this gave congress a say in which states could have slavery.

The issue the compromise was about was whether there should be slavery in the western territories. Maine wanted to be added to the Union, however, slavery was banned there. If Maine were to be added to the Union, it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the nation and the Senate. So, the Missouri Compromise, proposed by Senator Henry Clay, allowed Maine to enter the Union as a free state, and allowed Missouri to be entered into the Union as a slave state.
The compromises of the previous decade could of have postponed the civil war and accelerate the civil war. The civil war was inevitable because of Missouri Compromise of 1820, Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave law, and Dred Scott Decision. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was about all states that are north of 36 degrees north latitude were to be free except Missouri. All states below the line would become a slave state so far there were some problems.
This compromise stated every thing north of a specific longitude and latitude were never allowed to become slave states. The Missouri Compromise was violated by a Senator in a free state upsetting citizens in other states. This was seen as a slap in the face of those that viewed slavery as a vital part of their way of life. Many people of the time had very deeply rooted feelings and traditions that either supported or loathed slavery. Each group was trying to force their personal beliefs on each other which helped fuel a long building rift.

Conflict between Mexico and the United States began when Texas, previously part of Mexico, became part of the United States.
