Comparing Ethos And Expectations Of Millennials In The Workplace

“The workplace has become a psychological battlefield and millennials have the upper hand, because they are tech savy, with every gadget imaginable almost becoming an extension of their bodies. They multitask, talk, walk, listen and type, and text. And their priorities are simple: they come first.” (Safer, 2008). There are many criticisms revolving around millennials in many aspects and this includes their workplace performance. It has been claimed that millennials have different expectations of what office life is and how they should be treated at the workplace. With regards to this, two articles were written by Fromm and Asher respectively to explore how millennials are different in the workplace and the factors that are important to them. …show more content…

They explain why I conclude that Fromm’s article is more persuasive. Firstly, we shall look at the credibility of the authors and the domains. We will first touch on Asher’s article that was published in The Huffington Post. The Huffington Post has proven to not be credible as Accuracy In Media, a non-profit organization aimed at serving as a watchdog for the new media, has exposed The Huffington Post for its false claims several times (Accuracy In Media (AIM), n.d.). AIM states that it “critiques botched and bungled news stories and sets the record straight on important issues that have received slanted coverage” (AIM, n.d. ). This topic on millennials is also clearly not Asher’s forte. In fact, Asher rarely publishes articles on millennials. Furthermore, the article was published under “The Blog”. In terms of evidence, the two are tied. Both articles make use of reliable sources. Asher used statistics from Pew Research Center which is a non-profit organisation that is unbiased. She also referenced Gallup - a reputable organisation dedicated to providing analytics and advice with a global reach and over 80 years of history (Gallup Inc., n.d.). The Millennial study is also reliable as it is by an educational institution. Fromm also references non-profit, government organisations, like the Bureau of Labour Statistics and trusted organisations like TriNet. Research is the foundation of any good argument. Without credible sources, the cogency of the argument would come into question, adversely affecting its persuasiveness.
