Lacrosse is a sport that has a language all of its own. The game has a variety of unique terms used to describe the fast-paced action on the field. It can be a lot for newcomers to the game to pick up, but DICK’S Pro Tips is here with a rundown of terms to help you get up to speed.
• Assist – The last pass that set sets up a goal.
• Attackman – One of the players that remains on the offensive side of the field for the entire game.
• Back door – When an offensive player cuts behind a defender to receive a pass.

• Extra man – When a team gets a player advantage in a penalty situation.
• Face-off – The way play is restarted at the begging of the game and each quarter as well as after each goal. A player from each team crouches low at midfield while holding their sticks flat on the ground while pressing the backs of their sticks together. The ball is placed between the pockets and, on the whistle, the players battle for control.
• Fast break – When a midfielder or defenseman breaks ahead of the rest of the midfielders and brings the ball down field.
• Feed – A pass inside to an offensive player right in front of the goal or near the crease.
• FOGO – A term for a player who takes face-offs but then gets off the field as quickly as possible. Stands for “face-off, get off.”
• Gilman – When a defensive player throws the ball as far as possible to the offensive end instead of passing to a teammate.
• Goal – The structure in which players attempt to throw into to score. It is also the term that refers to what happens when a player scores.
• Goaltender/Goalie – The player who guards the goal on defense. This player has a larger stick head to stop
