Education in Australia and United States are internationally recognised as being of a very high standard. Although both countries follow slightly similar methods of funding, both recognised that their approach is unjust. In Australia, schools (private and public) receive most of the funding from the States, Territories and Commonwealth government (Education Training, 2018). Indeed, the majority of the money comes from the territories and states (approximately three-quarters) goes to public schools whilst the Commonwealth funding goes to private schools (Catholic schools) (Hanrahan, 2017; Boston, 2017).
What are the difference and similarities between Japan educational system and the US educational system? Japan's education system is very strict, unlike the US where there is more freedom. Since I just came to America from Yemen a couple months ago I thought it would be a good idea to compare and contrast American schools with Yemeni schools. All my life, up until October 24, 2015, I have spoken Arabic, written in Arabic, and studied in Arabic. Coming to America and being pushed to learn a new language has been difficult. This change has made me notice big differences between the teachers, students and the workload given in American and Yemeni schools. Afghanistan values practical education, and US values formal education. First, In Afghanistan there is not enough school, but in America there are enough schools for their citizens. Most of the school are only for boys in Afghanistan, and only 5 percent of schools are for females. In America the education system is Co-educations which means both female and male can study in same school, but in Afghanistan there are separate schools for men and for females. Second, there is also some differences in legalization system of education between America and Afghanistan.
In my opinion, this documentary is extremely interesting and it made me realize how some of us take education for granted, being that students from other countries face so many problems with trying to complete school along with putting their lives at risk. Even though the film was based on education, I mostly saw structural functionalism, gender inequality, and stereotypes. According to Freire, he feels education does not prepare students for the world. Rather, education hinders the students’ learning experience and creativity. The author criticizes how “the more [students] completely… accept the passive role imposed on them, the more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is.” Instead of teaching students how to think critically, the teachers feed the students answers which is detrimental to the students’ thinking, for this only “imposes [the teachers’] thought on” the pupils. Freire believes the real way education can prepare students for the real world is through authentic thinking.
