Short Stories To be audacious means to be recklessly brave, this is a flaw because a person that puts pride and bravery over safety can find themselves in life threatening situations. Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “With audacity one can undertake anything, but not do everything.” Those who are audacious often times throw themselves into many predicaments thinking they will come out successful, but at times, they fail. When a protagonist in a story has too much audacity, it is a weakness. A common flaw shared by the protagonists in the short stories “Full Circle”, “The Most Dangerous Game” and “Sound of Thunder” posses is their audacity getting the best of them. Sue Grafton’s, “Full Circle”, describes a determined private detective, Kinsey Millhone, whose audacity during an investigation almost got her seriously hurt or even killed. After a murder Kinsey had personal connection to, she was insistent on finding out who the killer was. In the midst of her inquiry, Kinsey comes to find out who the killer is after finding the murder weapon in their car. Suddenly, the man comes home and realizes what Kinsey has found and begins a high speed car chase. Kinsey’s audacity kicked in she was determined to find him, describing, “I jammed my accelerator to the floor and pinned myself to his tail” (185). Before being able to get caught, the criminal crashed into a construction site, killing him instantly, Kinsey was able to slam on the brakes with just enough time to stop. This is why her audacity was a flaw. Instead of causing someone to crash and die, or even getting herself hurt, Kinsey could have called for help from the police and they could have found an alternative to a high speed chase. All in all Kinsey was very lucky to not have been right with the killer, crashing into the
