For centuries, the caste system dictated almost every aspect of Hindu life. The caste would eventually split up into upper and lower classes, causing a segregation between both communities. There have been many attempts to get rid of the system, but unfortunately it is still being used in India today. In Document 3, the excerpt from the Mahabharata states “Enjoy the pleasure bestowed on you, and bear the pain on you.” Referring to the caste system, this statement describes the pleasures or the pain that a Hindu receives in their lifetime.
The caste system holds the view that a person's caste influences their decision-making regarding marriage, employment, education, etc. Despite the fact that it is still in use today, the caste system underwent some major changes over time in India. In today’s time, according to Pew Research center they stated how in India, caste segregation is still widely practiced. For instance, a huge percentage of Brahmins said they would not accept a member of a scheduled caste as a neighbor. However, the majority of Indians believe that caste discrimination is not a major issue in the nation, and two-thirds of those who identify with scheduled castes or tribes also believe that their specific groups don't face a lot of prejudice.
The meaning of stratify means to arrange, group, or classify. Americans are stratified usually by socioeconomic status such as gender, race, age, social class, culture, and sexual orientation. Social Class refers to a group of people with similar attributes such as, wealth, and status. A social class, or in other terms class society, is a group of personal opinions described concepts in the political theory and social sciences focused on copies of social stratification where people are set into a group of hierarchical social class, normally being the lower, working, middle and upper classes. Sociologist use different methods to determine social class, objective, subjective, and reputational method. Objective measures the hard facts, subjective measures what people think of themselves, and reputational measures what people think of others. The lower class is the people living in poverty, homelessness, and maybe unemployment.

Comparing the standard of living between the various classes, it is apparent that the upper class has a lavish lifestyle with high standards of living. Upper class individuals are seen as reputable and well-off person in the society. Meanwhile the middle class, lives off between the means of standard living established by the upper class and lower class. The lower class has been set the standard by society to be living on making ends meet, living off paycheck to paycheck.
Social class by definition is the grouping of people into a set of hierarchical social categories consisting of the lower, middle, and upper classes. It is a term used by many to identify their personal status in their lives. “Popular culture, especially television, has defined what different social class groups are like. The television show The Beverly Hillbillies depicted what happens when people who are poor gain entry into the upper social class. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air showed how people of color in the upper social class live” (Cook, Jennifer M. and Gerard Lawson, 2016).
Social Stratification is a system by which society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. In other words people are ranked according to their wealth or prestige. Social Stratification has beneficial consequences for the operation of a society. That’s why we have a certain form of social stratification in every society. The jobs in modern societies vary in form of importance, prestige and wage.
The caste system has been in India’s culture for a long amount of time. It is still around in India because people’s minds will not change about it. This practice has had effects on people, but growing up in a certain caste people believe it is right and just. Even people who are peasants think that is okay and do not desire to be in a higher caste, treated with respect.
Social stratification is a particular form of social inequality. It is a system of interaction or differentiation whereby some people get fewer or more rewards than others. Power, wealth and prestige are the bases of stratification. Other than these, race, ethnic, gender, human rights, religion, social forces have also been counted on affecting the social stratification. How do these construct, maintenance and change the social stratification?
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
Going back to the colonial period, India’s social structure was a bipolar one: the elite and the mass. The elite consisted of the educated ‘upper cream’ that consisted of mass leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Jinnah, whose manner of activism was through petitions and demanding better political representation. On the other hand, the masses were left unrepresented and did not play a crucial role in the politics of the nation. The post-colonial Nehruvian Social Welfare period saw the rise of the classes. The classes were mainly state-dependant for employment and this period saw the emergence of the middle-class.
I used Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques with some of my clients. I was not trained in this therapy but was familiar with the idea of being in the here-and-now. This technique worked for my schizophrenic client by keeping her focused on what was happening each day by writing in a journal and distracting her from what she thought had been happening in her past. I was able to use Art Therapy with the client I had with PTSD, depression, and suicidal thoughts. I had one client on probation who was ordered to be in counseling before she could get off of probation.
Some might argue that India’s Caste system is closely related to However, Caste and social hierarchy were more different because Caste happens over different lifetimes, and social hierarchy can happen over one. In the caste system people could move their position in their current life, however they could have moved up or down depending on how they acted in their last life. Social classes are a form of social stratification that refers to the existence of structured inequalities between individuals and groups in society. A social class is a group of people of comparable status, power and wealth which are usually classified as upper class, middle class, and lower class. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
