Society: The Basics defines social stratification as “a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy” (Macionis 207). Social stratification comes about from two primary systems: the class system and the caste system. The class system is defined as “social stratification based on both birth and individual achievement.” (Macionis 209). The class system allows for people to move their class by gaining education and skills. Class distinctions are less distinct and people are able to many their own decisions regarding their life.
