Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games, wrote a timeless classic in 2008. The story follows Katniss Everdeen who sacrifices her life for her younger sister and competes in an area in which they must be the last one standing, this is achieved through the death of other candidates. She uses her resilience to persevere through this trying time. Similarly, the movie Tomorrow When the War Began, produced by John Marsden (2010) follows the main character Ellie who must overcome adversities and show resilience to power through the unknown army that overthrows her town. It is clear that in the book, The Hunger Games, the film Tomorrow When the War Began, a common theme of resilience is significant to the respective stories. This can be seen in examples where the characters have resilience to cope with emotional pain as well as protecting others in order to survive. Coping with emotional pain to survive is present in the novel, The Hunger Games, and the film, Tomorrow When the War Began through the characters ability to overcome melancholy and grief through various coping methods in order to survive. In the novel, Katniss sings to Rue’s corpse, in order to cope with the sadness Katniss feels while Rue is dying. Upon Rue’s final request, Katniss sings a lullaby despite her extreme sadness; “Rue’s eyes have fluttered shut. My throat releases the tears and they slide down my cheek. But I have to finish the song for her.” (p.g. 284).
