In my experiment I was testing the effect of varying baking soda amounts in a buttermilk pancake recipe. I was interested in seeing how the different baking soda amounts would change the texture, color, and height of the pancake. The texture of the pancake varied. The first few batches, with no to small amounts of baking soda, were very dense and didn’t have many air bubbles. When we followed the recipe using the suggested amount of baking soda, Batch E, the pancake showed more, larger air bubbles than the first few batches.
Imagine a world where a crime is stopped before it is ever committed. Numerous books and movies have explored this possibility. In one popular movie, Minority Report, a future crime is “seen” before it actually occurs, and the potential offender is located, captured, and imprisoned before the offense can be perpetrated. This action would be characterized as proactive policing. Muhlhausen (2017) defines proactive policing as “getting out in front of events in the hopes of preventing crimes and working with the community to reduce crimes” (para. 1).
Sadly, during the last few years the relationship between the community and its police has significantly deteriorated. This has been due to the way some officers have handled certain situations in which the use of violence or deadly force could have been avoided. Because of this, some sectors of the community no longer trust their police; such distrust has gotten to the point that they rather take matters into their own hands than calling them for help. Although not all officers misbehave and abuse their power “it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch”. The media has also contributed in promoting the idea that most cops are bad by transmitting, over and over, videos of police officers abusing their power.
New York City is constantly undergoing change effects that ultimately some effect on everyone. However, some changes have greater effects on specific group than others. As it turns out minority groups, blacks and Hispanics, are frequently targeted and and affected by the changes in the city especially when policing is involved. Discrimination and stereotyping is something minorities constantly go through on a daily basis. Assumptions and generalizations about their culture, personality, and education is based solely on the basis of their race/skin color.

The topic for this research proposal project is on community policing, and the factors that are involved in determining if relationships between law enforcement and citizens in these neighborhoods are strained. In order to be successful, community policing must be built on trust, as both civilians and law enforcement must work hand in hand to protect their communities. If there is a lack of trust, then these programs becomes broken, and can therefore lead to other violence and criminal acts. This research proposal project will focus on minority based communities and citizens, where the majority of the citizens are either African American or Hispanic.
