Many activities done for fun are derived from historical beginnings. The game of football, for example, is believed to have descended from the Ancient Greek game harpaston. The gladiator games were put on to mark when an important event took place, like a battle victory.

The second common point, for both sports, is celebrity. The winning gladiator became very famous, and the same for football players, they become famous and everybody knows them. The third similarity is related to the risk of injury. During gladiators fights, not all gladiators were killed, but most of them would be injured, or severely hurt. The same thing happens with football players that can have broken legs, or other serious injuries during the game.
